I have had guys challenge me in a leg workout and I always outlast them and outlift based upon body weight. Once I trained legs with a guy and he threw up and I did not see him till a year later.

I am a fulltime teacher and mother of a teenage girl. Also, I am the strength coach at my high school. In my off time I train myself and others. My clients have won overall trophies in the NPC first time out the gate. I love competing and empowering others to take control of their health and lives.

Lifting stats: Any you would like to share?

Free Squat 155 for 4 reps, Smith Machine Squats 185 for 7-8 reps, Leg Press 8 Plates (8×45) for 5 reps ( 7 with spotter 😉 ), Adductor/Abductor 125/150 for 8-10 reps, Strict Wide front Lat Pulldowns 85lbs for 8-12 reps, Barbell rows 115 for 6 reps, T-bar rows w/ a 45lb + 25lb plate for 6-8 reps, Shoulder Press 40lb Dumbbells for 5-7 reps, Curl 35lb Dumbbells for 7-9 reps.

Greatest accomplishment from lifting and/or fitness in general?

Honestly, beyond placing in a local natural body building competition and personal lifts/stats……. what I consider to be my greatest fitness accomplishment is successfully overcoming personal obstacles/difficulties (and those who know me know I’ve struggled) to be the healthiest/strongest (both mentally and physically) I’ve ever been in my life.

Favorite exercise to do in the gym?

I love to train back, so I’d have to say: Barbell and T-bar rows, front lat pull-downs, cable rows (individual and dual grip, wide and narrow), Hammer Strength front pull-downs, Hammer Strength Mid Rows.

Ever have guys challenge you in any sports, lifting challenges or wrestling?

Yes.  I out leg pressed a guy at my gym that challenged me to “show him up” by about 40lbs and 3 reps, and I um… always win at wrestling ;).

Anything you would like to add or tell your fans?

Don’t ever give up: on your dreams, those that you love, or hopes that everything will turn out for the best!!

While I strive to get stronger in all of my lifts, the four exercises that I have been most concerned with due to the current training program that I am following (531 by Jim Wendler) are the squat, bench, deadlift, and overhead press.
Max Lifts
Deadlift: 225 lbs
Squat: 165 lbs
Bench: 105 lbs
Overhead Press: 75 lbs

Greatest accomplishment from lifting and/or fitness in general?
Definitely qualifying for nationals at my first NPC bikini competition!

Favorite exercise to do in the gym?
Pull ups for sure..probably because I have always been able to do them! I especially love weighted pull ups with chains. I also love to use chains for dips, another one of my favorite exercises. I also enjoy decline push ups with a plate on my back. As you can see, I love bodyweight exercises and challenging myself on these by adding additional weight!  A new favorite of mine is Goblet split squats, the quad burn is no joke!

Ever have guys challenge you in any sports, arm wrestling or wrestling?
Not yet! I have, however, beat guys in pull up and push up contests. I am also proud to say that my very first time pushing the prowler I was able to match my training partner (a 200 lb powerlifter) in weight!

Anything you would like to add or tell your fans?
While it is important to be healthy, there is a fine line between health and obsessiveness. I used to be the girl who would bring tupperware containers of chicken and broccoli to family gatherings, even during the offseason. Now, I let myself enjoy treats on these special occasions. And no, I don’t do extra cardio or starve myself the next day to “undo the damage.” However, I don’t skip workouts and I stay on track with all of my other meals so it does not have a negative impact on my body composition. Point being, a few not so healthy meals will not make you fat, it is what you do on a consistent basis that matters!

I’m stronger than I ever have been and it’s starting to actually look like I work out. Self confidence and more like-minded friends are a great side effect of gym time and competing!

Favorite exercise to do in the gym?
LOVE rack pulls, weighted dips, and ab days!

Measurements: Any you would like to share?
14% bodyfat, off season

Ever have guys challenge you in any sports, arm wrestling or wrestling? If so what happened?
When I was in the Marines my Sgt told me if I could get 20 pullups he’d give me a 72 (3 days off)…I worked for about a month and a half, every other day, and got up to 11 in boots and cammies. I basically stopped training because work got busy, so I never got my 72. But I did get a whole lot of respect from my male Marine counterparts!

Anything you would like to add or tell your fans?
I was in the Marines for 5 years as an aviation electrician. I am now 34 years old, married with a 2 and 5 year old, and a Licensed Massage Practitioner in Washington State. I own my own business, and have a great network of friends who educate and encourage me through my fitness endeavors!
In April 2013 I competed in my first Figure competition with the NANBF. I placed first in Beginner Figure, and second place in Novice Figure. This coming April 2014 I will be stepping on stage again with the NANBF to compete in Physique, BodyBuilding and Mixed Pairs.

Oh man, I am terrible with keeping track of this. Ha! I always go for my heaviest each day, but some days I am feeling stronger than others. I mostly use free weights…I love ‘dem dumbbells. 🙂 I usually use between 15-30 lb db’s, depending on the exercise. Typically, I bench around 80 lbs, but with a spotter I have benched my body weight.

Greatest accomplishment from lifting and/or fitness in general?

Overcoming and continually beating my Anorexia- an eating disorder I struggled with for over 12 years. Weight lifting has allowed me to do that.

Favorite exercise to do in the gym?

Various types of curls, and shoulder and Military Press. Ooh, but I also love my push ups too. lol.
Ever have guys challenge you in arm wrestling or wrestling? If so what happened?

Yes! So many times. Most often, however, guys often back out before even trying. Funny thing is, I am not that strong– I just work my butt off in the gym for my muscle.

Anything you would like to add or tell your fans?

Never give up and believe in yourself. Your mind is such a powerful thing, it is scary. You want something, fight for it!!! Have a goal in mind, work your butt off and leave the excuses home, and watch yourself SURPASS those goals. Your body is listening

Greatest accomplishment from lifting and/or fitness in general?
I started training about 2.5 years ago when I started my first online challenge to transform my body, my motto from the start was to get strong and get lean. Wow did I blow past my expectations! Not only did I get strong and lean but since than I gained SO much knowledge, friendships, happiness, attitude and passion. I than discovered bodybuilding competitions which offered another challenge for me, I LOVE challenges and what an an amazing journey it has been, after doing figure for a my first couple shows I decided to do physique.  I took a year off to bulk up and opened my eyes to a whole new me. I am started to see muscles I didn’t know I had before, or at least more lines and definition.  I am leaning out and learning my body better with each and every show.  No hard cutting anymore…I lost 7lbs of lean mass last spring but this year I am using carb cycling and sled work to lean down with minimal muscle loss. I have made so much progress but this is only the beginning to a new muscular me…and I can’t wait!!  My past experiences reinforce the way to live, love, grow and give FITNESS. Words cannot explain how proud I am of my accomplishments thus far.
Favorite exercise to do in the gym?
I love so many but I’ll try to narrow it down to one each.  Starting from the bottom:
Calves – The calves are definitely a part I give the least amount of attention to. To be honest I think too big of calves look silly and of course I’ve seen bodybuilders  with tiny calves and they look absolutely ridiculous too.  There is definitely middle grow with these guys.  I find that my calves are a very stubborn and refuse to grow. I am fully aware their difficulty to build but man… how heavy do you need to go?!?  With that said my favorite would be the calves on the Leg press, low rep high wt.
Hamstrings – Compared to my quads my hamstrings are an often overlooked and simple inferior… maybe it’s because I can’t see them, I have no clue. The fact is hamstrings are the huge muscle group, with lots of potential. I know they used during my quad day such as squats but my next goal as I progress into physique is to catch my Hamstrings up with my quads so 1. I prevent injury and 2. build a nice set of legs for show time.  My favorite is the classic prone leg curl.
Quadriceps –   I have been told numerous times that these are one of my best features. I have worked hard to work all 4 muscles…. again this goes to another classic… the SQUAT.  I love all variations but my go to is the back weighted BB.  Watch out when I get in that rack!

Back – The back is a HUGE major muscle group; one of the biggest yet is one of my weakest. I had no clue how intense your back make up is with tons and tons of muscles. Right now my training includes exercises for back depth and back width.  My biggest focus on my back right now is isolation, focus and more importantly the use of proper form and technique.  I need my back to grow strong and powerful.  I have a taper I just need to improve it!  My favorite with this one would be a toss up between the Kayak cable row and the DB Row.

Abs – The abs are a muscle group that gets worked but nothing to intense. At my last shows I was able to asses my abs when my body fat % was low enough. I was proud to see my nice abs under the layers of body fat. Knowing that no matter how many crunches you so they are useless for getting a six pack. Its diet! Eating healthy and being consistent with your workouts will get you a six pack. I still want some depth for when I am on stage so I do include them in my split.  My favorite would be decline crunch with weight.
Chest – The chest is one of those vanity muscle groups mainly for men but I think women too!  There are many different variations of the bench press that are great exercises, I love them all. Incline DB press are my personal favorite chest exercise.

Triceps – The triceps are also an often overlooked muscle group yet that is one of the problem areas for females.  Its sometimes are to realize that the triceps make up about 2/3 of the upper arm yet most people want to work the biceps I know I do.  Knowing that having solid arms I try not to let these guys fall behind my biceps.  My favorite  is another classic dips.
Biceps – Oh the glorious Biceps. Yet another vanity muscle group.  I love working my biceps, these and my legs make me feel like she-woman. hahaha ok maybe not that extreme.  My favorite would be alternate incline dumbbell curls, allows me to lift heavy weights and feel a great burn.

Shoulders- One of my top 3 favorite muscle groups to work out. These are definitely my vanity muscle group I think I check them out each and everyday. When they start to popping I can genuinely guess where I am at as far as body composition. I love when I can see distinction between my front deltoids, side deltoids, and rear deltoids.  DB overhead press is my favorite and the best overall exercise for the shoulders for me. It works all 3 heads of the shoulder….proper form and technique is very important with these. Shoulders are by far the scariest for me to go heavy on, I try to have spot each time.
Last but not least…
GLUTES!! hahaha I love single leg dead lifts….ohh those burn. But I have to credit tons of Squats for my ‘full’ back side! teehehehe
Ever have guys challenge you in arm wrestling or wrestling? If so what happened
Mine is pretty funny, in junior high my female friends and I were hooked on the local roller rink. Mind you I am still young enough that it was all rollerblades! But still…you may chuckle in my expense. No joking we were there every Friday night, hip as ever. Needless to say you can only go around in a circle so many times….so you start to think of other fun activities. This led the guys to arm wrestling, rubber band wars and spit contest. The ladies would set and observe this mini ‘roller’ Olympics, until one Friday I had enough. I was and still remain a small package, short, compact but athletic. I wanted in on the royal, so I stepped up and got in the mix. Granted the first few boys I arm-wrestled I had no chance but I vividly remember challenging a short stature guy name Justin, we placed out elbows on the felt bench used to put on your skates. Leaning over, breathing deep, and nervously wiggling my toes in my rollerblades still attached to my feet. We clasped hands, counted to 3 and sat. I was using all my might, I could feel my veins in my forehead rise. I may not have been making progress in the direction I wanted but I wasn’t going backwards either. I could feel my biceps engaging , my chest tighten. I had no idea I had this type of strength in me. I know I gained a smile as I realized I as in as much control as he was, my arm wasn’t being thrown like a rag doll. After what seemed like an entirety, we mutually conceded but deep down I felt like a winner. I truly realized I had muscle! Granted this was at the age of 15 and it wasn’t until late 20s I did anything about it. But at that time it became a ritual to the weekly roller grind – arm wrestling the short chick b/c she just may surprise you!
Anything you would like to add or tell your fans?

Personal Information Fitness for me is not only a state of mind or spirit; but it truly is a lifestyle that surrounds you. It is important when being a athlete that promoting health and fitness is more than a yearly phase or diet routine but it is who you are. For me it is as important as applying in yourself and your future. I love the feeling of being able to help motivate others each day, I am just a cute and dorky mid-western girl who’s heart is as big as her smile and is committed to making a difference!

Personal Interests 1. World travel — I have been to 11 countries so far! Can’t wait to get back on that jet plane
2. Art – painting, graphic design, sculpture, stain glass, photography to name a few. I actually have a art studio in my house and not a home gym believe it or not! 😛
3. Cooking — my father was a chef when I was little and made amazing things just on the fly. I love taking my creativity into the kitchen and finding new recipes!
4. Camping/bonfires – Hiking and exploring, just simple being outside.
5. Being Active and having fun – I love team sports: soccer, kickball, or just pick up games of tennis. I also love classic board games/cards.

….oh and of course playing with my dogs!

Greatest accomplishment from lifting and/or fitness in general? In 2009 I earned my B.S. degree in Kinesiology and last year, I started my own personal training business to share my passion for fitness with others! Also, I finally did my first bikini competition this year at the Lauren Powers Classic. With no previous experience, I was excited to come in third place. I loved the experience so much that I have signed up for my first NPC qualifier competition, the Orange County Classic in August. Aside from competition and personal training, I am an avid marathon runner and recently qualified for New York, which I will be running in November. I consider the mental strength, ongoing drive, and determination I have acquired from these experiences as my greatest accomplishment! I think it also serves as a source of inspiration for others to follow their passion and live a healthier lifestyle!
Favorite exercise to do in the gym? Battle ropes, abs, lunges
Ever have guys challenge you in arm wrestling or wrestling? If so what happened? Not so much, but a few guys have challenged me to run with them before. A few years ago, a young man at the gym challenged me to a 3 mile run (1.5 miles up and back) I maintained a 7 minute mile pace and he tried his hardest to keep up! On my way back with only one mile left, I found him on the side of the road still at mile 1, throwing up from the exertion! Needless to say, that was the last time he challenged me to a run.
Anything you would like to add or tell your fans? Don’t give up!! Stay focused on your goals and dreams and never let any obstacle/source of discouragement get in your way. Hard work, self discipline, and perseverance do pay off!! Always stay positive, love your body, and strive to be a better, stronger person than you were the day before.

Greatest accomplishment from lifting and/or fitness in general?
My greatest accomplishment would definitely be the drastic changes I have made to my body and life in general in the past 5 months all by myself; and also being able to inspire and motivate others to jump in the fitness wagon and live a healthier, fit life.

Favorite exercise to do in the gym?
Squats, squats, squats, and more squats!!

Anything you would like to add or tell your fans?
Be determined. You want something? go and get it!! Weight loss is a hard journey but it is not impossible; at the end of the day it is all up to you and the decisions you make. Be patient, disciplined and persistent, keep in mind that you will reach your goal if you treat your body with respect by eating right and exercising regularly. “Discipline is just choosing between what you want most and what you want NOW.”
